Falling on hard times after fast-living success, novelist Tony Barrett (Gary Cooper) and his wife, Dora (Helen Vinson), leave New York City for the rundown family farm in Connecticut. After Tony sells a piece of land to farmer Mr. Novak, Dora returns to the city, but Tony remains behind, intent on writing about the Novaks -- including enchanting daughter Manya (Anna Sten). Tony and Manya become close friends, prompting the jealous suspicions of Manya's boyfriend, Fredrik (Ralph Bellamy).
