Faye Dunaway and Richard Widmark star in a critically acclaimed story of a May-December romance that scandalizes the quiet Southern town of Cold Sassy, Ga. At the turn of the century. When free-thinker "Grandpa" E. Rucker Blakeslee, (Richard Widmark), marries a much younger Love Simpson (Faye Dunaway), shortly after his wife's death, the town ostracizes her. Love, a beautiful Yankee milliner, yearns for a home to take care of but she hides a terrible secret that prevents her from returning Blakeslee's love. Gradually their relationship strengthens her and what begins as a marriage of convenience becomes much more when, one night, she reveals her disturbing secret to him and by so doing, removes the only barrier to their passion.
